Neighbors in Action Food Share Program

Neighbors in Action's Food Share program operates out of our Cabot and Lyndonville offices, serving three counties which are Vermont’s poorest, most rural and with highest unemployment and neediest population.

We have had a record number of new families signing up for our food box distribution programs in both Cabot and Lyndonville. While we saw a 37% increase in the number of food share boxes we distributed in 2022, in 2023 there was a 100% increase - twice as much as last year's total.

Our “Food Share” program has developed into much more than a free food handout. It has become an exercise in community. Folks, who might never have worked together before, pitch in, shoulder to shoulder to help their neighbors in need. They unload truckloads of food, unpack and arrange or repackage it for distribution.

See our amazing volunteers in action at our bi-monthly food shares in Cabot and Lyndonville, Vermont!

We distribute a three days or more food supply to an average of 300+ families from our Cabot office and another 180+ from our Lyndonville location during our bi-weekly food shares.

In addition to food, we give away pet food, toiletries and other household items when available to us.

For more detailed information, please see our 2024 Annual Report.

Cabot's FREE Food Share happens on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month* from 12:00 - 2:00 pm

*Subject to change, particularly during the holiday season.

Lyndonville Food Share- UPDATE

Dear Neighbors,

Good news! We have a plan to cut the number of cars attending our Lyndonville food share program in half while still serving the same number of people!

HOWEVER, it is going to require a couple of BIG CHANGES to how we do things:

1.) NO NEW SIGN-UPS IN AUGUST: While we get the new plan going we will only be serving EXISTING FAMILIES who are already on our list. We apologize and can help folks find resources in the meantime.

2.) CARPOOLERS ONLY ON FRIDAYS: Drive-up will be available for those who PICK-UP FOR 2 OR MORE FAMILIES AT A TIME on Friday, August 8th & Agust 22nd from 10:30 - 12:30.

3.) SINGLE-FAMILIES ON WEDNESDAYS: For folks who only pick-up one box, we will be offering a WALK-UP FOOD SHARES on Wednesday, August 13th & August 27th from 10:00 - 2:00.

4.) OVERFLOW-TRAFFIC ON FRIDAYS: We also have a plan to send the overflow traffic to the Lyndonville Armory for staging when the line goes beyond Maple Street.

By dividing the "carpoolers" from the single-box pick-ups, we will be dividing the number of cars attending on any one day in half.

Friday "Carpoolers" will still follow the Drive-Up model along Main Street. That way, we will be able to distribute 3/4 of our boxes into just about 50 cars at the curbside.

On alternating Wednesdays we will use the Walk-Up method for single-box distribution. We are providing 4 hours (10:00 - 2:00) for 50 attendees who pick up only one box each. On those Wednesdays, please come to our door or call us (802-626-1212) between those hours if you need a single box of food for your family and we will help you to your car if you need assistance.

WALK-UPS: Our neighbors who live close enough to walk-up or take the bus to access our food share are welcome to attend on Fridays no matter how many boxes they need.

Unfortunately, we will need to put a temporary freeze on new sign-ups. We will let you know as soon as we are ready to accomodate new families and, in the meantime, can provide information about other resources available in the area. For example, our Cabot location is still accepting new sign-ups and will be holding their food shares on August 13th & 27th. (neighborsinactionvt.org to learn more)

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this new plan possible.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Amy Hornblas, Executive Director
